Chivalry. A dying artform?
Why is it that chivalry is dead in Iceland? Frankly I think Icelandic men were a bit too quick in deciding that feminism gave them a perfect excuse to stop being chivalrous. For me, being chivalrous is not bound to gender.
And it is not inherantly mysogenistic. That's kindof like saying that feminists hate motherhood and are all gay. It's a generalized oppinion based on a faulty preconception. Or mayhap a convenient way of avoiding to do stuff...
Being chivalrous to me means being polite and thoughtful..For example. If I see a person smaller and weaker than me carrying a heavy load I offer to assist. If someone has their hands full I might open a door for them. Help someone leave the bus with their baby-carriage.
The other day I was changing a tire. Which I'm perfectly capable of, mind you. However, I think it only polite for a person to offer help in such circumstances - if only just moral help. Five people walked passed me without saying a word... but the sixth didn't. Nooo, siree... the sixth person offered help, offered tools and moral support...The other five were men.
What I'm saying is Icelandic men are spoiled rotten and most of them wouldn't even remotely consider stopping to help a woman... let me add a subclause: unless she kindof looks like a supermodel and/or is wearing a mini skirt. I, unfortunately, fall in neither of those categories. Mind you, I do have a problem with accepting help (in fact - a psychologist once gave me the direct task of asking for help at least once a day) (I plan on returning once this has been accomplished. It's been six months now.) but the only man I know who has offered to help me carry a bag was, yup, you guessed it - not Icelandic...
P.S.
I offer sincere apologies for this vulgar generalization to those few Icelandic men this does not apply to,
